Hidden Gems nearby

Beyond the well‑known highlights of Normandy, there are many smaller, less familiar places to discover—true hidden treasures that add a special note to your stay.

Abbey of Saint‑Vigor (Cerisy‑la‑Forêt). A masterpiece of Romanesque architecture from the 11th century. Visit the 15‑part apse and the 40 Gothic choir stalls, among the oldest in Normandy.

Enjoy a stroll in the adjacent park—home to an exhibition of modern sculptures—and around the Étang aux Moines.
Guided tours: Wednesdays at 15:00 (May–September) and Fridays at 10:30 (July–August).
Address: Rue des Sangles, 50680 Cerisy‑la‑Forêt

Château de Balleroy. Just a few kilometres away rises this imposing 17th‑century Baroque castle, built by François Mansart. The château impresses with its formal gardens, English‑style park, and the unique Balloon Museum that tells the story of aviation.
Address: Rue du Sapin, 14490 Balleroy

Jardins de Castillon. Situated roughly between Planquery and Bayeux, these gardens enchant with over 2,000 plant species, themed garden rooms, and lovingly designed terraced gardens. Stroll through the water garden, oriental garden, a flower alley, the blue terrace, or the boxwood maze with arboretum. Afterwards, you can take home your finds from the on‑site nursery.

Memorial  for press freedom. Since the First World War, war photographers have risked their lives to capture the reality of conflict. Particularly famous are the images by Robert Capa, such as those of the Normandy landings in 1944. In 2007, Bayeux, together with Reporters Without Borders, created a unique European memorial to press freedom. It commemorates more than 2,000 journalists killed since 1944. Twenty-seven white steles bearing their names line a park-like path near the British cemetery. Robert Capa, perhaps the most famous war photographer, is also honoured here with his own monument. His motto was: “If your pictures aren’t good enough, you weren’t close enough.”

Rue des Cordilières, 14400 Bayeux

Jardin des Sources  Tucked away in the village of Vaux-sur-Seulles, the Jardin des Sources is a hidden gem for garden lovers. Since 2012, this 5,000 m² haven has been lovingly landscaped into a paradise of natural springs, a pond, and gently flowing streams. The setting provides the perfect stage for an enchanting collection of perennials, grasses, heritage roses, and ornamental shrubs.

Charming highlights include a peaceful garden pavilion, elegant statues, and striking plants such as the impressive gunnera.

The garden is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and on the 1st & 2nd Sunday of each month from 2:00 to 6:30 pm.

Admission is €4 (free for children under 15). A small plant shop and light refreshments are also available on site.
